The M.V. JOY Fishing Club derives it's title from the name of the boat the Club originally chartered for it's fishing trips on the Kaipara Harbour on the West Coast north of Auckland.
Since 1980 of course the Club has grown in size and spread its wings further regarding where we do our fishing - with frequent trips out on the East Coast, Hauraki Gulf, etc.
We also have occasional trips further afield to places like Whangaroa, Kawhia and even New Plymouth, Napier and Tauranga at times.
About the M.V. JOY Fishing Club
The M.V. JOY Fishing Vessel
The charter boat from which the Club draws its name is a truly local boat. Often boats move around considerably during their lifetime, but the MV JOY was built in Auckland and has worked in the Auckland/Helensville area her entire life.
She was designed by Jim Young and built by Keith Atkinson at Browns Bay on the North Shore in 1967. Originally she was used for Shark Fishing but became a general fishing charter boat as time went on.
The M.V. JOY is of strip-plank construction, is 38 foot long and 12 foot wide.
The original Owner and Skipper was Len Scott up until 1986 when he sold her to Ted Clemens - about this time she moved to the Kaipara Harbour. Ted owned and skippered the "JOY" for a further 13 years before selling her to Terry Somers who repainted her original livery of Light Green and White - to Orange and White.
